Seguire una dieta semi-vegetariana, dove il 70% del cibo consumato proviene da fonti vegetali, può ridurre del 20% il rischio di morire a causa di malattie cardiovascolari, rispetto a chi segue una dieta con meno del 45% di alimenti provenienti da fonti vegetali. È la conclusione di uno studio dell’Imperial College London, presentato al meeting annuale dell’American Heart Association EPI/Lifestyle.

I ricercatori hanno analizzato le abitudini alimentari di oltre 450 mila cittadini europei che hanno preso parte al progetto Epic (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), partito nel 1992. Nessuno dei soggetti coinvolti soffriva di malattie a lungo termine all’inizio dello studio e tutti avevano un’età compresa tra i 35 e i 70 anni. Gli scienziati hanno seguito i partecipanti per un periodo di 12 anni, raccogliendo informazioni sul peso, la dieta e lo stile di vita in generale. Dai risultati è emerso che una dieta semi-vegetariana potrebbe aiutare a prevenire malattie cardiache e ictus, e di conseguenza allungare la vita delle persone.

“Invece di evitare drasticamente gli alimenti di origine animale, sostituire solo in parte il consumo di carne con cibi provenienti da fonti vegetali può essere un modo molto semplice e utile per abbassare la mortalità cardiovascolare”, hanno finito i ricercatori.
